2. Usage

2.1 Summary of Oracle Spatial Index Advisor

The Oracle Spatial Index Advisor is an administrative application for analyzing the effectiveness of spatial indexes defined on spatial data using Oracle Spatial.

Spatial data of type SDO_GEOMETRY may have a spatial index associated with it. A spatial index consists of a set of tiles where the database administrator specifies the size and number of the tiles. The coverage of the geometries by the tiles has a direct impact on the query performance.  The Oracle Spatial Index Advisor allows the user to see the interaction of the tiles with the geometries.

Using the Oracle Spatial Index Advisor, users may

A toolbar allows the user quick access to tasks which are most frequently used when viewing and analyzing spatial indexes.

Users of the Oracle Spatial Index Advisor should be familiar with the representation and indexing mechanisms for spatial data, as well as the concept of tessellation and its use by Oracle Spatial to generate the primary filter.

2.2 Installation

Oracle Spatial Index Advisor version 2.2.0.0.0 is installed using the Oracle Universal Installer by selecting it as a component during the installation of the Enterprise Manager.

2.3 Running the Oracle Spatial Index Advisor

The Oracle Spatial Index Advisor can be run as a standalone product by invoking the Enterprise Manager oemapp utility as follows:

oemapp sdoadvisor

On Windows platforms the Oracle Spatial Index Advisor can also be run from the Oracle program group corresponding to the home into which it has been installed by selecting the 'Oracle Spatial Index Advisor' item from the popup menu.

When run standalone the Oracle Spatial Index Advisor allows direct connection to a database or indirect connection through the Oracle Management Server. When run from the Enterprise Manager Console any database connection is always made indirectly through the Oracle Management Server. If an Oracle Management Server is running before installing the Oracle Spatial Index Advisor, it must be stopped and restarted before using the Oracle Spatial Index Advisor in indirect mode.

2.4 Problems and Other Notes

If you are running on a multi-processor system, buttons and menus may not be set correctly after a draw operation. If this occurs, try setting focus to another window and then re-focusing on the Oracle Spatial Index Advisor or minimizing and restoring the application.

If you receive a "TNS: no listener error" when launching the Spatial Index Advisor from a context sensitive menu in the Enterprise Manager tree, you should save your tnsnames.ora file.  You can do this from the Enterprise Manager Console.  Select "Add Services to tnsnames.ora" from the System menu.  When the new services are saved, the Spatial Index Advisor should launch correctly.

If you are viewing the tool on NT with a monitor color palette of 256 colors, sometimes the canvas background may be painted entirely black or white when drawing. Please go to the display properties of your system and change the monitor color palette to true color or 65536 colors.
