While the performance of DML operations is largely independent of the number of extents in the segment, certain DDL operations for objects in a dictionary-managed tablespace such as dropping and truncating segments are sensitive to the number of extents. Performance measurements for these operations have shown that keeping the number of extents below 1024 is well within the range that the Oracle Server can efficiently handle.

If possible consider either:

rebuilding the segment with a larger extent size ensuring the extents within the segment are the same size by specifying storage parameters where NEXT=INITIAL and PCTINCREASE=0

moving the segment to a locally managed tablespace (Oracle 8.i)

4794 Approaching MAXEXTENTS 4795?he MAXEXTENTS segment storage parameter specifies the maximum number of extents that can be allocated to the segment. Once a segment has filled the maximum number of extents, any insertion will fail with an error message.

Consider increasing the value of the segment's MAXEXTENTS storage parameter. Otherwise, rebuild the segment with a larger extent size ensuring that the extents within the segment are the same size by specifying storage parameters where NEXT=INITIAL and PCTINCREASE=0. 4796 Insufficient Free Space 4797?he Oracle Server allocates space for segments in units of one extent. When the existing extents of a segment are full, the Oracle Server attempts to allocate another extent for that segment. If the Oracle Server can not find an equal or larger set of contiguous data blocks to satisfy the new extent allocation request, an error is returned.

Consider increasing the size of the tablespace by: enabling automatic extension for one of its existing datafiles, resizing one of its existing datafiles, or adding a new datafile.

Or if the tablespace is suffering from free space fragmentation, consider reorganizing the entire tablespace.

A tablespace is suffering from free space fragmentation when enough free space exists in the tablespace to satisfy the extent allocation request, but the space is spread across several free smaller "chunks" and therefore cannot be used to satisfy the request as the allocation must come from a collection of contiguous blocks. 4798 "Index Suffering from Fragmentation 4799As indexed values are updated or deleted, the amount of unusable space within the tree increases. This poor tree utilization results in the performance of index scans on that index being less efficient. Consider rebuilding the index to enhance performance. 4800 Excessive Row Chaining 4801In two circumstances the data for a row in a table or table partition may be too large to fit into a single data block. This results in row fragmentation.

In the first case, the row is too large to fit into one data block when it is first inserted. The Oracle Server stores the data for the row in a chain of data blocks reserved for the segment. Row chaining most often occurs with larger rows, such as rows that contain a column of long datatype. In this case, row continuation is unavoidable without using a larger database block size as defined by the DB_BLOCK_SIZE initialization parameter.

In the second case, however, a row that originally fit into one data block is updated so that the overall row length increases and the block's free space is already completely filled. In this case, the Oracle Server migrates the data for the entire row to a new data block assuming the entire row can fit into a new block. The Oracle Server preserves the original row piece of a migrated row to reference the new block containing the migrated row.

When a row is continued or migrated, I/O performance associated with this row decreases because the Oracle Server must scan more than one data block to retrieve the information for the row.

There are two ways of correcting row migration problems. Rebuilding the table or table partition eliminates row fragmentation as rows are tightly packed into each database block during recreation. However, if no changes other than fixing the migrated rows are to made to the table or table partition, focus on fixing the problematic rows instead of performing a complete rebuild.

Note: If rows are likely to continue growing through updates, consider increasing the segment's PCTFREE value to reduce the likelihood of future row fragmentation. 4802 User Object in SYSTEM Tablespace 4803?he SYSTEM tablespace contains database metadata. Though it is possible to store all of the database's objects in this tablespace, Oracle strongly recommends not doing so. Storing user data in the SYSTEM tablespace increases the likelihood of space management problems. Since the only way to rebuild the SYSTEM tablespace is to recreate the database, it is recommended user objects be relocated to another tablespace. 4804 Nonzero PCTINCREASE 4805rThe PCTINCREASE setting specifies the percent by which the third and subsequent extents grow over the size of the preceeding extent. Oracle recommends using a PCTINCREASE setting of zero, making your task of managing space easier as using a nonzero PCTINCREASE could lead to tablespace free space fragmentation problems.

A tablespace is suffering from free space fragmentation when enough free space exists in the tablespace to satisfy the extent allocation request, but the space is spread across several free smaller "chunks" and therefore cannot be used to satisfy the request as the allocation must come from a collection of contiguous blocks.

Fortunately tablespace free space fragmentation is easy to prevent by adhering to the rule that segments in a tablespace should have exactly the same size. This ensures that any free extent in a tablespace can always be used for any segment in the tablespace. There will never be a free extent so small that it cannot be chosen.

To further ensure extent sizes are equal, Oracle8 added the MINIMUM EXTENT clause to the CREATE TABLESPACE command. Specifying a value for MINIMUM EXTENT ensure all allocated extents in the tablespace are a multiple of that value. If the extent being allocated would normally be smaller, then it will be automatically rounded up to a multiple of MINIMUM EXTENT. Also if an extent is being trimmed, for example, as a result of a parallel direct load, then the remaining size and trimmed size will be set to multiples of MINIMUM EXTENT. Always specify a value of MINIMUM EXTENT that is equal to the value of INITIAL to ensure uniform extent sizes. 4810?ablespace analysis has not been performed yet.

To run the Tablespace Analysis, use the Tools=>Tablespace Analysis menu item or the Tablespace Analysis tool bar button. The analysis is performed immediately. In addition to the Tablespace Analysis report, the results are displayed in the Analysis column of the Segment List, in the form of colored flags which represent the problem status of each segment. 4811 5Space Management Alerts and Warnings: Tests Performed 4812NDepending on the tablespace being evaluated, one or more of the following tests are performed to detect space management problems.

By default, all appropriate tests are performed using default thresholds. To disable a particular test or to override the default thresholds, use the Tools=>Tablespace Analysis Options menu item. 4813 gDetects segments that have too many extents and performance may be degraded for certain DDL operations. 4814 ?etects segments that are approaching the maximum allowed for the segment. Insertion operations will fail if a segment fills the maximum number of extents. 4815 ?etects segments that are unable to perform another extent allocation given the current amount of free space within the tablespace. 4816 ?etects index segments which should be rebuilt in order to improve index scan performance. An ANALYZE INDEX VALIDATE STRUCTURE command is performed as part of the analysis. This command does not impact the statistics used by the cost-based optimizer. 4817 ?etects segments where I/O performance is decreased because the Oracle Server must read multiple blocks to return the single row. Current ANALYZE statistics are required for accuracy. 4818 :Detects user segments that exist in the SYSTEM tablespace. 4819 yDetects segments that have a nonlinear growth and could potentially lead to tablespace free space fragmentation problems. 4820 Processing: {0} 8000 5Are you sure you want to remove Measure Folder "{0}"? 8001 0Are you sure you want to remove Dimension "{0}"? 8002 +Are you sure you want to remove Cube "{0}"? 8020 Day 8021 Month 8022 Quarter 8023 Year 8024 Calendar 8025 Fiscal 8026 End_Date 8027 Time_Span 8028 <Not Default> 8029 Short_Description 8030 Long_Description 8031 5There should be at least one level for the dimension. 8032 )The levels for hierarchy {0} are invalid. 8033 +The join keys for hierarchy {0} are invalid 8034 3There should be at least one column for each level. 8035 vThere are more than one level with type {0} in hierarchy {1}, and this is invalid.
