However, SPFILE is a binary file stored on the server. Using SPFILE enables you to start a database from any node that is a member of the cluster database without having a local copy of an initialization parameter file. SPFILE also improves database performance because parameter setting changes made by Oracle Enterprise Manager and internal self tuning mechanisms persist across shutdowns. Oracle strongly recommends using SPFILE for storing database parameter settings.

For more information about using SPFILE, see the Oracle Database Administrator's Guide.

Specifying the Filename and Size

To use a server parameter file:

Select Use server parameter file (SPFILE).

Enter the complete path to the raw device in the Filename field.

For example:

/dev/vx/rdsk/oracle_dg/clustdb_raw_spfile_5m

Note that the SPFILE device must be at least 5 MB in size.

For more information about using SPFILE with Oracle RAC, as well as for information about setting up raw devices, refer to the Oracle Real Application Clusters Administration and Deployment Guide.

Related Topics

Overview of the Database Upgrade Assistant

Copyright © 1996, 2009, Oracle and/or its affiliates.
